I’ve always loved sandwiches, and I enjoy looking for new and fun ways to remake this classic meal. There are a few on here you might recognize and a few you won’t. But no matter which one you choose, I know you’ll fall in love at first bite. Worried about the heat? Don’t be! That’s the beauty of cooking at home. It’s totally up to you to make these as spicy or mild as you like.
1. Dahi Sandwich (Curd/Yogurt Sandwich)
Unlike the cheese curds you get in Canada that are usually in chunks, this Indian version is made using yogurt, and it looks like thick cream cheese. It works as a lovely, creamy base into which you’ll add crunchy diced veggies and a few spices. Fill the bread and cook on medium heat until the outside is golden and the middle is warmed through.
2. Lamb Pitta Toastie
If you’re looking for an alternative to your usual burrito, this lamb pita will knock your socks off. Inside a pitta, you’ll find savory ground lamb spiced to perfection. Oh, and don’t forget the cheese! As this cooks, the oils from the meat will seep into the bread, making it even tastier.
3. Aloo Toast Sandwich
Aloo is the Hindi word for potato, and it’s a popular ingredient in Indian cooking. But have you ever had it in a sandwich? I knew I’d love this recipe once I saw the combination of warm spices and luscious chutney. And it all starts with simple, boiled potatoes. How easy is that?
4. Moong Dal Toast
Believe it or not, the main ingredient of this bread is yellow lentils. They’re lightly sweet, easy to digest, and pack in a ton of protein. Better still, they make this recipe totally vegan-friendly. It’s served fried as an open-faced sandwich. You definitely won’t want to put two slices together for this, or you’ll lose the magic of its crunchy texture.
5. Viral Indian Bread Omelette
Although this sandwich isn’t loaded with spice, it’s actually a super traditional street food in India. You’ll find it at vendors all over the place, and I love that the recipe has gone viral. After all, what could be better than egg-dipped bread wrapped in cheese, served crispy with bacon and scallions? It takes minutes to throw together, and it will fill you up all day long.
6. Paneer Sandwich Recipe
Paneer is a milky type of soft cheese that looks just like cheese curds, though the texture is more like feta (crumbly). It’s sliceable and super mild, and since it doesn’t melt like regular cheese, it holds its shape in everything from toasted sandwiches to curries. Mix it with veggies, spices, and a little tomato paste for something pretty unique and hard to resist.
7. Avocado Tandoori Chicken Sandwich
First of all, how amazing does this Indian sandwich look? That bright green against the vibrant tandoori chicken has me drooling. And it tastes even better than it looks. Keep it simple with smashed avocado and chicken, or ramp it up with some crunchy red onions and green chilies.
8. Chilli Cheese Sandwich Recipe
When you see ‘chili cheese,’ I know your mind goes to something meaty and loaded with tomato sauce, right? But this is something else. It’s literally cheese mixed with a heavenly diced chili and pepper blend, spread onto bread, and grilled until gooey.
9. Bombay Grilled Sandwich
One thing I love about Indian cooking is how versatile and inclusive it is. Many recipes are naturally vegetarian (if not entirely vegan), and they’re easy enough to modify if they’re not. And even without a big portion of chicken or beef, they’re still wonderfully satisfying and filling. This sandwich uses potatoes, tomatoes, and a generous helping of spicy chat masala to give it a bit of heat.
10. Besan Toast Recipe
The method for cooking this is similar to French toast, in that you’ll dip the bread into a wet mix and then fry it. But with the combination of turmeric, red chili powder, and asafoetida, it’s nothing like the French toast your Mom makes. Instead, this is extra savory and quite an exciting way to start your day.
11. Spicy Masala Cheese Toast
This recipe is a little like masala pizza bread. You’ll cook everything in the pan until tender, then sprinkle over the cheese to melt. Once that mix is ready to go, just spread it over a slice of your favorite bread (toasted). All you’ll need is tomato, onion, a little chili powder, and, of course, mozzarella cheese.
12. Mayonnaise Sandwich
As the name suggests, the main ingredient of this sandwich is mayo. So, if you’re not a huge fan, go ahead and skip this one. But if you like that rich and creamy goodness only mayo can provide, I think you’ll really enjoy this veggie-filled meal. The only thing to remember is that you’ll need enough mayo to hold everything together, but not so much that it will seep out as it cooks.
13. Kutchi Dabeli Recipe
I think these are the prettiest sandwich on this list. Just look at that color! These babies aren’t just bright and inviting, but they’re also crunchy, easy to make, and loaded with incredible flavor. For added crunch, I like to portion the potato filling into sliders and fry them like patties.
14. Veg Club Sandwich
As with any classic club sandwich, this recipe calls for three slices of bread. So you’ll have the traditional outer layers and then one in the middle that’s usually there to separate fillings. In this case, you’ll make something close to coleslaw using cabbage and carrot along with pepper and mayo. If you want to boost the protein, you could always add a layer of sliced tandoori chicken, too.
15. Chicken Tikka Sandwich
This is the perfect thing to make if you’ve got some leftover chicken tikka. Now, I know that probably doesn’t happen often, but just in case, you should probably bookmark this one! That said, I’ve found ready-made chicken tikka in my local supermarket, and that was really tasty, too.
16. Cheese Chutney Sandwich Recipe
When I see chutney, I typically think of mango because it’s my fave. I like it sweet, spicy, and nice and chunky. But this green recipe is a little different. Made using lots of cilantro, green chilies, and a few key spices, it’s more like an Indian pesto than a chutney. It’s the star of the show in this sandwich, blending perfectly with the ooey-gooey cheese. But you could just as easily add some grilled chicken to the mix.
17. Rava Toast Recipe
Here’s another Indian-style French toast that’s wonderfully savory and bursting with goodness. Unlike the recipe above, this one uses semolina, making it thick and creamy. It also calls for some of that green chutney we talked about above. Just like the other recipe, this is served as an open sandwich.
18. Indian Cucumber Chutney Sandwich
This twist on the classic tea-time favorite takes a somewhat bland cucumber sandwich and adds a whole new level of flavor. Let’s be honest, cucumber in a sandwich isn’t exactly exciting. But this version, loaded with spiced chutney, will have you reaching for seconds.
19. Avocado Chutney Sandwich
Avocados are jam-packed with vitamins and healthy fats. But I know that not everyone likes to eat them sliced. They’re a little too buttery, which isn’t always a good thing. So, if you’re not a fan of thick slices of avocado, just go ahead and smash them instead. You could even add some of the chutney to the mix to help distribute it more evenly.
20. Chicken Curry Sandwich
I’ve been eating a version of this for years. Coronation chicken is a hugely popular sandwich filling in the UK, made with mayo, curry powder, chicken, and raisins. This version is similar, only it doesn’t include the raisins, and it’s served in a flatbread. Also, you’ll use madras paste for a beautiful kick of curry taste. I like to add fresh mango for a touch of sweetness, but that’s totally up to you. Click on a star to rate it!
