Warm up your winter nights with a bowl of caramel dumplings. Balls of dough are baked in a thick and bubbly caramel sauce until they transform into sweet dumplings with caramelised edges.
These dumplings are a spin off of my favourite golden syrup dumplings. I know golden syrup can be hard to source in some countries, and some people just prefer not to buy a bottle for a few tablespoons in a recipe. That’s where these caramel dumplings come in - they’re made with simple, everyday ingredients you will always have on hand. Flour, egg, butter, milk and sugar - that’s it!
You’ll love how easy these are to throw together and pop into the oven. Enjoy these dumplings with a big scoop of ice cream or some runny cream.
INGREDIENTS
Caramel dumplings are so easy to make at home and you only need a few simple ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need (measurements are listed in the full recipe at the bottom of this page)…
Self-Raising Flour - or use a mix of plain / all purpose flour and baking powder instead.EggButterMilkBrown Sugar
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 180C / 350F. Sift 1 cup of flour into a large mixing bowl. Using your fingertips, rub 1 tablespoon of cold butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. In a separate bowl, beat 1 egg & 1 tablespoon of milk together then stir into the flour mixture until just combined. Roll the dough into tablespoon-sized balls & place them into an oven proof dish. Place 2 tablespoons of butter into a saucepan on medium-high heat. Once melted add 2 cups of water and 1 & ½ cups of brown sugar into the saucepan. Cook, stirring, until sugar dissolves and syrup is smooth. Bring to the boil and remove from heat. Pour the syrup on top of the dumplings & bake for 15 minutes or until the dumplings are puffed & cooked through. Serve with ice cream or cream.
